Ruach: The Breath of God
Have you ever heard someone say they need a fresh wind? In the Bible, wind is often connected to breath, life, movement, and the work of the Spirit of God. As I sit here writing this message to share with you, I was staring at a blank page when I felt refreshed by a fresh wind. It made me wonder how many people may need a fresh wind at this very moment.
God has more to give.
So let me ask you, how are you feeling?
What Is a Fresh Wind?
Sometimes, we do not really know what we need until we realize we have been running on empty. You know what I mean. But before we go any further, let’s pause for a moment. When you hear the phrase fresh wind, what comes to mind?
For me, it makes me smile. I think of a breeze that comes out of nowhere, gently reminding me of the nearness of my Father. It reminds me that God does not have to announce His arrival in the way we expect in order to be present.
The Word says, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
John 3:8 NIV
The Wind of the Spirit
What does “everyone born of the Spirit” mean? A lot happened before Jesus made this statement, but what I want to point out is this: just like the wind, you cannot see the Spirit of God with your natural eyes.
You cannot physically see the Holy Spirit moving the way you see a person standing in front of you. But just like the wind, there is evidence that He is there. His work becomes evident through a transformed life. The transformation happens first in the unseen.
We may not always know where the wind is coming from or where it is going, but we can hear it, and sometimes we can feel it. In the same way, there are moments when we may not fully understand what God is doing, but we can still discern that He is near.
The Breath of God Gives Life
When I think about a fresh wind, it also makes me want to take a deep breath and exhale. So try it for a moment. Take a deep breath, hold it for three seconds, and then exhale. Pause for real. One, two, three. Isn’t that refreshing?
There is something about breath that reminds us of life, and when we talk about the breath of God, we are talking about the One who gives life itself.
The Bible says, “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…” Genesis 2:7 NIV.
Friend, your God, my God, literally breathed His breath into man’s nostrils. Can you wrap your mind around that? You are living because of the breath of God. You have purpose. God does not waste His breath. From the very beginning, it was the breath of God that caused man to live.
When You Feel Winded
As I write this, we are halfway through the natural year, but even if you are reading this later, the message still applies. God is not limited by our calendars. We are on Kingdom time, and He knows exactly when this word needs to meet you.
Maybe you are feeling winded. Maybe it has been hard to catch your breath. Maybe you feel like you need a break from the day-to-day demands of life, but you do not see how that is even possible. If that is where you are, I came to share good news with you: God is ready and willing to blow in your direction.
God Can Breathe on What Looks Lifeless
The very breath of God has the power to give life to what looks lifeless. In Ezekiel, the Lord said, “Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.” Ezekiel 37:9 NIV. What seems lifeless in your life right now? What area feels dry, buried, delayed, or beyond repair? He is still able to breathe on it.
A Fresh Wind Gives Direction
His breath also has the power to give direction. The Bible says, “Bring me back from gray exile, put a fresh wind in my sails!”
In this context, exile often represents separation from home, peace, or the presence of God. Gray can symbolize heaviness, dullness, or the loss of joy. So when I read the words, “put a fresh wind in my sails,” I picture God restoring movement, direction, and strength.
A sailboat without wind cannot move forward. Without wind, it can begin to drift and go wherever the waves take it. That is why a fresh wind matters. It is not only about feeling refreshed; it is about being moved in the right direction by the Spirit of God.
Are you in need of direction or clarity in this season?
Seeking God First
Whether this word is meeting you at the halfway point of the year or in a completely different season, I speak by faith that the days ahead will align with the will of God for your life. I pray that your hunger for His righteousness will increase, and as your appetite for His Word grows, your life will begin to reflect what you have been feeding on.
His Word says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 NIV. His Word also says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:8 NIV.
Friend, when He is near, things change. I know some of us know this, but it is time to take what we know and move it into action.
Jesus tells us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 NIV.
What things was He referring to? The things the enemy tries to use as stumbling blocks to get us off course. The things that try to introduce fear, anxiety, and worry about tomorrow. God already knows what we need, and because of that, we do not have to be anxious about tomorrow.
But we do have a part to play. We have to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.
What is His kingdom? What is His righteousness? I challenge you to seek the answers in His Word.
A Prayer for Fresh Wind
Lord, blow on us. Restore the places that have been damaged by self-care that was really avoidance. Heal the places that have been buried under the list of things to do because we did not want to face them. Deliver us from us, because sometimes we are the ones standing in the way. Expose any areas that are holding us hostage, and give us the strength to move forward.
Holy Spirit, show us how to partner with You in all things. Lord, send Your fresh wind. I declare that Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven for the person reading this today. Breathe Your breath on these words, and do only what You can do.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
