Part One: When God Says Be Strong and Courageous
Welcome back, friend! Are you ready to grow deeper in our faith walk together? Let’s walk the Word.
Buckle up, because we’re diving into a hot series on fire insurance.
If you’ve spent any time on Adulthood Avenue, you know this word all too well: insurance. Health insurance. Car insurance. Life insurance. Some are required, some are optional—but they all exist to cover you when life happens.
People call it “peace of mind,” but I’ve learned it’s really stewardship. True peace doesn’t come from a policy—it comes from God.
I know what you’re thinking: “Zee, those words and terms aren’t that deep.” But actually, they are. Because when I follow God’s instructions, it comes with a level of coverage no human policy could ever provide.
Here’s the bottom line: the people who prepare ahead of time are the ones who walk away covered. And walking the Word always comes with divine coverage.
That’s exactly what we see in the book of Joshua.
Think of Joshua, for a moment, like an insurance agent introducing his people to a divine policy. But before Jericho ever comes into view, let’s pause and remember who Joshua is.
“After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: ‘Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them.’” (Joshua 1:1–2)
Joshua had just stepped into Moses’ role an enormous assignment. He was leading a nation that had wandered forty years in the wilderness, a people who had never fought real battles before.
In fact, Joshua was leading the children of those who came out of Egypt.
God had said:
“Your children, who you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.” (Numbers 14:31)
Picture it: they were like our modern-day Gen Z. All they knew was wilderness life. They didn’t live in Egypt—their parents did. They weren’t there at the Red Sea crossing. All they knew was manna.
Exodus 16:35 says:
“The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled.”
It’s like how some of us only know a world with AI like ChatGPT, while our parents had encyclopedias stacked up to write a paper. Different generations. Different struggles.
The First Assignment
Joshua’s first assignment? Jericho a fortified city with walls so thick and intimidating it seemed impossible to conquer.
But before God gave Joshua a battle plan, He gave him a personal one:
“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.” (Joshua 1:6)
Strength and courage were the first form of fire insurance. Not because courage alone could knock down walls, but because courage fuels obedience. And in this story, obedience was everything.
God’s Protection Plan in Action
Courage is the Policy Starter
Joshua wasn’t stepping into small shoes. He was stepping into Moses’ shoes—the prophet who split seas and spoke with God face to face. Imagine that weight.
But notice this: God didn’t hand Joshua a sword first.
He handed him a command:
“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you.” (Joshua 1:7)
Courage was the policy Joshua needed to trust God’s plan.
Real-Life Connection: Courage doesn’t mean fear never tries to rise—it means you choose to stand on God’s truth. Since He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind, we can believe His Word above every anxious thought.
Takeaway: Fire insurance starts in your heart. If you don’t believe God’s promises, you won’t stand when the walls come down.
Obedience is the Coverage
“March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days.” (Joshua 6:3)
God’s Jericho strategy didn’t make sense. No weapons at first. Just walking. Six days once around. Seven times on the seventh day. Then shout. That’s it.
It may sound simple, but here’s the truth: the fire never falls without obedience. God wasn’t after their strength—He was after their trust.
Real-Life Connection: Fire insurance is in the details. Sometimes God asks us to be silent, to forgive, or to take a step of faith that feels pointless. But the covering always comes through obedience.
Takeaway: Protection isn’t about your ability—it’s about your alignment with God’s voice.
Everyone Shares the Coverage
Joshua wasn’t leading trained soldiers. He was leading an entire nation—men, women, and children. And every single one had to obey the command: no shouting early, no breaking formation, no skipping a day.
And when they moved as one, the walls fell:
“When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.” (Joshua 6:20)
Real-Life Connection: Fire insurance isn’t just personal—it’s communal. Your obedience affects your family, your church, and generations to come.
Takeaway: Coverage spreads when everyone agrees to follow God’s plan together.
Prayer
Lord, I love You. Thank You for speaking life through Your Word. Thank You for wisdom. Thank You for reminding me that courage isn’t about my strength but about trusting Yours. Forgive me for the times I doubted or tried to fight battles in my own way. Teach me to obey quickly, even when Your instructions don’t make sense. Help me to lead my family, friends, and community with faith that obeys. Keep me under Your protection plan.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Next week, we’ll step into Rahab’s story and see how her scarlet cord became the first “fire insurance policy” in Jericho.
